Otemon Gate was the main access way of Sendai Castle, and was a special gate that was only opened when the feudal lord was arriving and leaving or during certain ceremonies. It was a two-story construction about 20 meters in width and 12.5 meters in height, and was one of the largest castle gates in Japan.
The exact date of its construction is unknown, and while one theory says it was constructed when Date Masamune built the castle, another theory holds that it was established during 1605–1624 when Masamune ordered major renovation on the castle. Yet another theory states that it was built in 1638–1642 when the second feudal lord Tadamune constructed the Ninomaru compound of the castle.
The Otemon Gate Waki-yagura Watchtower standing next to the gate was burnt down along with Otemon Gate during an air raid in 1945, but was rebuilt and donated to the city in 1967.
