Drawing of the Sendai Castle Town in the first year of the Meiji period

Drawn in a realistic style depicting an overhead view from the sky above Sendai Castle or Aobayama to the castle town spreading out to the eastern side of the Hirose River.

The castle town, along with the Hirose River meandering throughout the entire drawing, is depicted in a grid pattern with samurai residences, their surrounding groves as well as other residences. The upper part of the drawing depicts the outskirts of the castle town, including Miyaginohara, a place renowned for and associated with poetry, Haranomachi, and Tsutsumi-machi. The main facilities and buildings in the castle town are marked with their names, and the moats flowing through the city and bridges are drawn in detail. The Oshu Kaido road passes into the castle town over the Nagamachi-bashi Bridge on the right side of the drawing. The road then passes through the Basho no Tsuji Intersection surrounded by buildings in a castle tower-style, then goes further north until exiting the castle town at Tsutsumi-machi on the upper left corner. In the foreground, Sendai Castle’s Otemon Gate along with a part of the castle’s Honmaru structure are also depicted.
